This position is for a research internship with the Microsoft Health Futures group at Microsoft Research in Cambridge (UK). This group brings together innovative technologies, world-class talent, and strategic partnerships to improve healthcare and health equity around the world. Research interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
For this particular role, we are looking for an intern to support research and the development of new analytical methods that advance understanding of emerging responsible AI challenges, opportunities, assessment methodologies, and potential broader implications of AI use within healthcare and/ or life sciences.
The role will require an interdisciplinary approach to research and a willingness to collaborate widely with projects across Microsoft Health Futures. The work will contribute to promoting a culture and approach to managing responsible AI best practices within the group.
The candidate will need to have some experience / interest in AI, methods of machine learning or data science; and have some experience/ interest in studying the responsible end-to-end development and broader implications of deploying emerging technologies in the domain of healthcare and/ or life sciences.
Responsibilities
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to develop responsible AI practices for healthcare and/or life sciences
- Study the interaction between humans and AI systems, with a particular focus on the ethical and sociotechnical impact of AI approaches and systems within healthcare and/ or life sciences
- Help the team develop and test new responsible AI practices and training approaches
Qualifications
- Be enrolled in a PhD program in human-computer interaction, applied ethics, social science and technology studies, critical theory, moral philosophy, research governance, policy, or a related field
- Have experience/interest in conducting research into responsible AI and the broader ethical and societal impact of AI systems within the domain of healthcare and/or life-sciences, including emerging policy implications
- Have experience with/ interest in critical approaches to technology studies, e.g., participatory methods, value-sensitive design, feminist methodology, etc.
- Have demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas
- Strong personal, analytical, and organisational skills with a passion for collaborative work
- Excellent communicator, in person and in writing
